St Cuthbert Wanderers continued their good form with a dominating performance in a 2-0 win over 10-man Wigtown & Bladnoch on Saturday.
Goals in either half from Ross Hunter and Trialist proved the difference as Jordan Williamson’s side notched their second victory in a week following last weekend’s 3-0 win over Lochar Thistle.
Saints dominated throughout and were given a boost when Wigtown went down to 10 men after a dangerous two-footed tackle on Williamson.
The deadlock was broken a minute before the break when Hunter was put through on goal with a great through ball which saw the skipper find the back of the net with a composed finish.
Buoyed by their goal before half time, Saints started the second half by continuing to play in Wigtown’s final third in search for number two.
On 58 minutes, Trialist did just that after beating his man and going round the keeper to tap it into an empty net.
St Cuthbert did not look content with two goals as they maintained an excellent attacking pressure on their opponents trying to finish the game at the hour mark, Dale Milligan wasn’t far off scoring as a last-ditch block denied the Saint’s a third.
It was a damage limitation exercise for Wigtown as they sat deep and hard to break down towards the end of the game. Saints thought they got a third in stoppage time, but the Wigtown keeper pulled out a fantastic save from McMillan’s close-range free kick on the edge of the box.
Wigtown’s number one found himself making another last gap save denying Williamson’s looping effort.
St Cuthbert’s saw out the match deserved winners.
